Understand the channel structure

German pet retail includes specialist chains, independent stores, garden centres, online retailers and large general retailers. Distributors can provide access to smaller stores, while direct relationships may suit a focused brand with a clear category story. The channel affects pack size, price point and the level of sales support expected.

German buyers often value product substance over a long list of features. A clear material story, practical sizing and consistent quality can be more persuasive than a broad catalogue. Prepare a German-language line sheet and be ready to explain the role of each product in the range.

Start packaging compliance early

Germany has specific packaging producer responsibility obligations, including registration and reporting through the national packaging register. The importer or distributor may manage some of this, but the supplier still needs to provide accurate packaging weights, material data and component information. Confirm who is responsible before artwork is approved.

Reduce unnecessary packaging and make material separation easy. Recyclability, clear disposal information and the avoidance of mixed materials are increasingly relevant to retail buyers. Packaging changes can affect cost and production time, so treat them as part of product development rather than a late administrative task.

Prepare German-language information

Consumer-facing information, warnings and importer details may need to be in German. A translated label is not enough if the text is awkward or the warnings are unclear. Have the final artwork checked by someone who understands both the product and the local retail context. Keep the original specification and the translated version aligned.

German retailers may also ask for detailed product data, images, barcodes and logistics information. A clean data sheet reduces friction and makes it easier for a buyer to evaluate the range. Avoid claims that cannot be supported by the product documentation.

Plan logistics and after-sales support

German buyers expect reliable delivery windows and clear communication when something changes. Confirm case pack, pallet configuration, lead time and the Incoterms that apply. If you are working through a distributor, agree how stock is replenished and who handles customer questions or returns.

A small initial order can be a sensible way to test the market, provided the unit economics still work after freight and packaging changes. Build a plan for repeat orders before the first shipment, because a listing that cannot be replenished creates more risk than a slower launch.
